Chango
Spasiuk:
Chango
Spasiuk was born in Apóstoles, Argentina in 1968. His father, a
violinist and his uncle, a singer, impressed in him an appreciation of a style
of folk music called Chamamé that is popular Northeastern Argentina and
Southern Brazil. He plays the accordion and composes music; he
credits his choice of instrument and his fondness for the 6/8 polka tempo to
his Ukrainian heritage.
In
the 80s, he performed on a local television program and subsequently was
invited to participate in the a number of festivals including: Festival of
Misiones, Festival Docente en Campo Grande, Festival del Tarefero en Concepción
de la Sierra, Festival del Durazno en Cerro Azul, and the Festival de la Madera
en San Vicente. Next, he moved to
Posadas, where he met a musician named Norberto Ramos who encouraged him to
relocate to Buenos Aires to study music. He went on to record his first album entitled “Chango Spasiuk” with his father
Lucas, who played the violin, and Jorge Sulligoy, on the played guitar and
vocals. This album has received many awards such as the: Carlos Gardel Award,
Kenox Award, Grammy Latino, Best new artist of World Music Awards from BBC, the
and Clarin Award.
In
the last few years Chango has toured many countries including the United
States, France, Netherlands and Germany. In 2010 he recorded a
double album, the first half is songs from traditional composers, and the
second half of the album consist of his own compositions. Chango
Spasiuk’s contribution to Argentine folk music has been compared to Astor
Piazzolla’s influence on the development of tango.
